Sonic Youth on Brighton Beach: 1985

Wow, Sonic Youth performing Brother James (from the 1983 Kill Yr Idols EP) on Brighton Beach in November 1985. Apparently they had a gig at the Zap later that day. I can’t believe I’ve only just seen this footage. At 1:30, when Steve Shelley’s drums kick in – how I wish I’d been there. It looks freezing though. I wonder if they went for a swift one in the Fortune of War afterwards.

It’s a ferocious performance, but in a somewhat sixth-formy post-gig interview (also available on YouTube) the band said they didn’t get a sound check and called the set a “bad publicity stunt”. In the nicest possible way, of course.
